We went to the Ocean Liners Restaurant, Celebrity’s specialty restaurant, on Monday night. They have a prix fixe and a la carte menu where they pair a certain wine with each course or you can order your own bottle (if you choose to drink wine). I had bread (gluten free, of course), pumpkin soup topped with a light curry cream, escalope of foie gras with citrus sauce, granite of passion fruit with white rum (to clean my pallet), fillet of sole souffle stuffed with a lobster mousse, assorted fruits & cheeses, zabaglione flavored with Marsala (Italian dessert), and fresh strawberries in some kind of liqueur (they were nice enough to give me two). On top of that, they brought over a tiered plate of chocolates and candy. Everything was very good and excellently paired with the wines. And although I’m not a foie gras eater (I chose it because I didn’t want a salad), I ate the whole thing :-). It wasn’t too bad, but I was reminded of how the kids feel when I make them eat something they don’t want to eat.

July 30/31, 2006 – Sunday/Monday: “But I don’t want to go, Daddy’s making me.” “Just give it 3 days, ” I said, “That’s all I ask and if you don’t like it then you won’t have to go anymore.” Hearing those words at the start of a 14 day cruise was not what I wanted to hear, especially with the first 2 days out at sea. But knowing Claire, and her past cruising experiences, I knew that the odds of her not having fun were next to nothing. We’ve hardly seen her (and Maxie) since.

July 29, 2006: Slept in, went to the train station, had breakfast, went back to the hotel, checked out, got on the train to Dover, rode for 2 hours, got on a bus (because they were doing work on the train tracks) to finish the trip to Dover, got on a taxi, got on the boat (took less than 20 minutes to check-in and get on the ship), went to our room, ate, walked around, went swimming, went to dinner, kids went to the kids program, went to bed. That’s it.

July 27, 2006: We probably pushed the kids a little too hard today. After finally getting everyone up and out to breakfast, Suzanne and I were excited to see some sights. But less than two hours after setting out for the London Eye, the kids just wanted to go back to the hotel and swim. So we didn’t do very much besides eating and riding buses. But the buses were pretty fun and gave us a nice view of London, especially the double-decker buses which are driven fast and furious, skimming people and cars along the way, which gives the feeling of being on Mr. Toads Wild Ride in DisneyLand.

Here are some more details of the day from Suzanne:

July 25-26, 2006: Getting to London was amazingly easy. We had a friend drop us off at the San Francisco airport, the flight was non-stop to London, and then we took an Express Train and Underground to the hotel. Easy as pie! The Landmark Hotel was very nice and the service was great. We ate at the Giraffe Restaurant which was very colorful and kid-friendly, then took a swim and went to bed. Here are more details:

Last weekend, the Workman’s organized a camping up in the Santa Cruz mountains and we went along with the Cousins, Ferraris, Petersons and some other friends. I wasn’t expecting much out of it, no actually I was expecting it to be a pretty boring and uncomfortable time. However, I was surprised that it was actually kind of fun and, as I told Gary, didn’t “totally suck”. I especially had fun on all the hikes.

When I was working, I would try not to start a new book. The problem was that if I found a really good book, I would have a hard time putting it down and would sneak out and read the book during my work hours. Once when I was working as a summer intern at Hughes Aircraft, I was so caught up in a book and continued reading at my cubicle after my lunch hour. At one point, I noticed out of the corner of my eye that my boss came in and saw me reading. He didn’t say anything, but they didn’t offer to put me on leave when I went back to school, which I guessed was because of that book.
Lately however, I haven’t found any books all that engrossing. I did read The World Is Flat by Thomas Friedman in a little over a day, but that was basically showing off since the book is over 500 pages and I was determined to speed-read through it quickly. It wasn’t until I The Mermaid Chair by Sue Monk Kidd caught my eye that I found another book that was truly engrossing.

- MD: Fruit has dissapated somewhat, high acidity, nose of straw, drinkable, but not exceptional.
- SC: Much better than Barron Herzog, little too acidic.
- SD: Lost its fruitiness, taste of cherry, drinkable but Zins should be jammier.

It is not often that Suzanne and I get to eat out. Last night, however, both kids were over with friends so we decided to have an evening together. Out of the blue, Cafe Torre popped into my head (maybe because I knew they have a good wine list) so we dropped off the kids and headed over there. Unfortunately, the experience was far from stellar.
