Ridge 2003 Lytton West Syrah

Last night, we finally were able to co-ordinate with our friend RexD to come over for dinner. It almost didn’t happen because RexD was up on Montebello Road in Cupertino putting bird nets over the grapes at a small vineyard that he and a group of friends are taking care of. It took longer than he thought, and then he was dirty and sweaty so he went home and showered before coming over. He finally made it 2 hours late, but we are glad that he did because it was great seeing him.

We had already finished dinner, so his plate of Trader Joe’s Tri Tips and Suzanne’s famous green beens was a little cold. But the conversation was lively and the wines were good, so he didn’t seem to mind.

RexD opened a bottle of Ridge 2003 Lytton West Syrah. It was a really nice Syrah, smoothed out by the inclusion of 9% Viognier. We aren’t big Syrah drinkers, and I can’t remember any particular aspect of this wine that stood out. But maybe that is just the sign of an excellent wine, because before we knew it, the bottle was polished off.

We also opened our last bottle of Norman 2003 Paso Robles Zinfandel and the comparison between them was interesting because the Norman was all sharp angles while the Ridge was smooth curves.

4 out of 5 stars
