Day 15 - Copenhagen, Denmark, Aug 9th 2006

Copenhagen was great. We employed our usual method of experiencing a city: Internet, coffee, souvenirs, chocolate. But we also went to Tivoli Gardens which was special.

Claire didn’t want to go into town again, so she stayed in the Fun Factory while the three of us went. We decided to take a taxi for a change, but this didn’t turn out so well. For one, the driver drove crazy, so Maxie ended up feeling sick. He also went to the far end of the main street, so it ended costing almost $30. But once we got out and started walking around, Maxie felt better.

The Stroget was a great, pedestrian only street with lots of people. There were some tourist shops, but also a lot of regular shops, and the locals far outweighed the tourists. We didn’t find an Internet cafe, but after searching around, found a free, city-wide Internet connection, so we had our coffee and searched the Internet at the same time. Their was a chocolate shop nearby, so we bought our chocolates. After doing some more souvenir shopping, we tried to find the shuttle bus location, but Suzanne read the map wrong so we ended up in the wrong spot and I needed to ask for directions to find our ride back to the ship.

After dinner on the ship, we took both kids to Tivoli Gardens. Maxie was in a great mood and was talking the whole time. We thought Tivoli Gardens was going to be cheap, since it only cost about $12 to get in. However, this didn’t include any rides, so we bought $50 worth of ride tickets which turned out to be enough for us to go on about 2 rides each. Maxie and I went on the worlds oldest roller coaster which featured a brake-person riding the car with us. (Someone pointed out that if this person fainted or fell off, we would be in big trouble!) Claire and Suzanne went on the balloon Ferris Wheel. Then Maxie and I went on another roller coaster while Claire ate her candy floss (cotton candy). We then all went on the bumper boats. While waiting in line, the kids noticed a pole with Chinese characters and told us what some of them meant. Claire remembers that the pole said “Summer, Spring, Winter, Fall”.

Next, we walked around a little and discovered a kids play area featuring a large bounce bag. The kids really enjoyed that and then went on the long slide, but it wasn’t very slippery.

Finally, we went to the aquarium. It wasn’t the biggest one that we have seen, but it was really nice because it was long but not very thick, so all the fish were really close. We saw some sharks, puffer fish, tangs, zebra stipped fish, red and white stripped fish and yellow fish.

At this point, Claire was getting tired so we took the shuttle back to the ship.
