(Suzanne) Today we reached the northern seaside resort of Warnemunde, Germany. The whole family (Claire included…woohoo!) took a short hike into town and along the beachfront. The wind was blowing at least 20 knots so we didn’t stay too long at the beach – white, sugary sand was whipping around in every direction. There were a lot of kite boarders and windsurfers out there which got my adrenalin going. It looks like a lot of Germans come here for vacation. And everyone brings their dog. Claire counted at least 16 dogs that passed by us, some cute, some not so cute.
After lunch, we took Maxie (Claire went to the Fun Factory) and rented bikes just outside the ship’s terminal. The owner of the bikes charged 2 euros for 2 hrs (what a deal!). The bikes were kind of old cruiser type bikes with few gears and handle bars high and wide enough to sit straight up and proud! Maxie’s bike was heavy, had no gears and was a little too small for him which made it kind of awkward. He fell twice; once in a deep sand pit and another time just riding down the sidewalk. We felt so bad, and he wasn’t very happy about it either, but he was a trooper and kept going. After riding through another part of town, we rode along a boardwalk adjacent to the beach. Soon the landscape shifted into a forest like area with trees canopied on either side of us. Every now and then little paths would pop up leading you to the beach. It was pretty cool!
