Christmas Letter 2005

I haven’t written much in this blog about what our family is up to. So here is a Christmas letter Suzanne wrote to fill in the details.
Dear Friends & Family,
This is a first time in a very long time that I?’?¨?’ve written anything at this time of year ?’?¨?? I got tired of writing, then Ticker & Bailey got tired of writing, then I was lucky enough to even get a decent picture out (without extensive editing) before February. So here it is?’?¨¬Ά
This year was a little different than the past in that a few unexpected events happened. The first major event (which was actually expected for the last few years) is that Bailey, our black Lab, passed away. He had cancer for the past few years with a life expectancy of 6 ?’?¨?? 12 months. We?’?¨?’re not surprised that he outlived the doctor?’?¨?’s prediction because of the way he lived ?’?¨?? he was so full of life. Max always said that when Bailey dies, he?’?¨?’ll die fetching a stick or on his walk, and that?’?¨?’s exactly what he did. His last few steps were on the same path that he ran on everyday for the past 13 years. It was hard on everybody since Ticker was gone. We miss him (and Ticker) dearly?’?¨¬Ά
Claire just walked in and said, ?’?¨??Hey, why aren?’?¨?’t you writing about us??’?¨? So hold out on the major events before I get into more trouble. Claire? Where do I start? She?’?¨?’s almost 7 (she would say 6 11/12) and in first grade. She?’?¨?’s outgrown being shy and now won?’?¨?’t stop talking. She?’?¨?’s in the same Mandarin Immersion School as Maxie and loves it. She?’?¨?’s been taking ?’?¨??real?’?¨? hula for a year now and performed in front of more than 1000 people at her hula school?’?¨?’s annual hoike.
Maxie is now into double digits (10) and 5th grade. His real passion is baseball, where he mostly played pitcher and catcher for his team this past season. He also started surfing with Max, and caught his first 4 foot wave (head high for him) at Pleasure Point in Santa Cruz. He also has the hair to prove that he?’?¨?’s a real surfer dude.
Max? Well, this is the second major event ?’?¨?? he retired (in April), or as I would like to say, is taking a long sabbatical. But because of his passion for working with start-ups, he?’?¨?’s at it again with 2 projects that he?’?¨?’s helping out with. He?’?¨?’s also surfing, crewing on a friend?’?¨?’s sailboat and mountain biking with me.
Me? Well, still working feverishly for my kids at school and with their extra-curricular activities. I helped coach Maxie?’?¨?’s baseball team this last season. Overall, it was an enjoyable experience but took me out of my comfort zone. I also got roped into playing tennis again after hanging it up 23 years ago ?’?¨?? something that I never thought I?’?¨?’d ever do, but it?’?¨?’s been good. And it?’?¨?’s made me think about getting in shape again and staying healthy (I have a long way to go).
I guess the last major event was that we sold our house and moved (about 1.5 miles away). We had thought about it for a long time and finally decided to go for it since it was the only way we would be motivated to finish the kids?’?¨?’ bathroom (which had been gutted for a year). Anyway, here?’?¨?’s our new address:
